The Home of MAYBERRY! Mt Airy was a city with diverse industry, from Textiles and furniture to the Granite Rock Quarry there was a little bit of everything starting with the City’s incorporation in 1885. In 1976 Mt. Airy’s name changed from the Town of Mt. Airy to the City of Mt. Airy when the tobacco industry sprang up everywhere. Made famous in the 1940’s with Andy Griffith’s depiction of his hometown Mt. Airy, the TV Show, Mayberry, put Mt. Airy on the map. If you visit Mt. Airy today you will not only see a statue of Mt. Airy’s favorite son, walking through town with Opie hand in hand, you’ll also find a wall of names and faces of each of the actors and actresses that starred in Mayberry. Tour a real live Mayberry with Flloyd’s Barbershop and the old City Jail, Mayberry’s replica courthouse, and much more! Do you recall Mt. Pilot in the show?? That is better known to the locals as Pilot Mountain. The Flattop rock has been a national landmark and a state park offering all types of outdoor activities, from rock climbing to rappelling and hiking as well as camping.
